True Joy

Have you ever thought about what brings you true joy? For me, I experience true joy when I am surrounded by my family and my friends. There’s nothing like sitting around laughing, playing a game, or watching a movie next to the ones I love. Or waking up from a slumber party with one of my nieces or nephews hearing them so excited to be spending time with me.

I also experience true joy when I am in the pasture, surrounded by my horses. Hearing the sound of hoofprints galloping around me is like a calming tune, sent directly to give me peace. The aroma of Levi and Grace instantly brings me joy. My horses always know what I need, and God never fails to work and speak through them.

I believe that God has created us all so unique. When He was designing you and me, He made us both passionate about different things. For me, it’s horses, sports, and family (okay – and playing with puppies.) For you, it could be art, music, dancing, gardening, photography, etc.

I don’t find it a coincidence when we discover things we are passionate about. I think God created us to love certain things because He knew it would bring us true joy.

This feeling of true joy isn’t just “happiness.” It is a deeper feeling, one that comes directly from our Heavenly Father. The Bible says that Jesus is the source of all joy, and in Him, our joy would be complete. (John 15:11) One version even says, “Jesus’ joy would fill our hearts with overflowing gladness!” (TPT version).

Resting in this truth that Jesus is the source of all joy, helps me to lean on Him more and seek after the things that have been inscribed on my heart that make me joyful. It makes me intentional with my pursuit of joy, and grateful God is there to fill me up anytime I need it, like a well that never goes dry.

So that leads me to this question, what brings you true joy? Is it boating or fishing? Reading a book with a cozy blanket and a hot cup of tea? Or maybe it’s cooking a big meal for your friends and family to enjoy. Whatever it may be, recognize it and pursue it with your whole heart.

Journal Prompt:
When was the last time you felt true joy? Make a list of everything that brings you joy, and then plan out a day this week to do one of the things on your list.
