Be Still

Why is it so hard for us to be still? I know our human bodies love to be on the move, and we love to stay active, but why can't we sit in God's presence, even if it's just for 5 minutes a day?

Two verses in the Old Testament use the word "still" in the same context:

Exodus 14:14 "The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still."

Psalm 46:10 "Be still, and know that I am God."

I love these verses because they remind us God is doing the work for us. He is fighting our battles, and He is just simply asking us to Be Still in His presence. These are just a couple of examples, but many times throughout scripture we are reminded of this stillness.

All scripture is God-breathed. It is given to us so that we can learn, grow, and apply. Some like the acronym “B.I.B.L.E. – Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth”

For me, I love that His word prepares and equips us to live for Him and His Kingdom. I love that every time I sit down to read the Bible, even if I'm in the same chapter I was before, I am always going to get something new out of it. I love that 10 people can read the same verse, and it means something totally different to each one of those people. I love that God's word comforts us and meets us where we're at. He is speaking to us through His word, and it's incredibly powerful.

If someone were to ask me what "Being Still" meant to me, I would say that it's an opportunity for God to speak into me, fill me up, and ignite my engine to go out and love others well. But in order for me to truly receive from this stillness, I first must open my heart and let Him in, no distractions.

How many times do we sit there in our quiet time with the Lord and get distracted because we can't set down our phone? Or maybe we don't love to sit in the quiet or read, so we start fidgeting and get side-tracked.

If this is you, and lets be real, we all do this sometimes, I want to encourage you to turn off the noise. First, identify what is distracting you. Second, remove it. If you need to put on some instrumental worship music do it! That helps me stay focused.

So now it’s your turn to figure out what helps you stay focused. Maybe it's a cup of coffee or a comfy chair; maybe it's outside in nature or in your car away from your kids. Wherever it is, sit and be still and let God pour into you until your cup overflows.

My favorite place to sit and Be Still is in the horse pastures. There is something about sitting in a quiet field where all you hear is your horse making sounds. It's extremely therapeutic to one degree, but it's also just the perfect place to listen to what God is speaking.

Journal Prompt:

Where is your favorite place to sit in stillness? (Quiet, no distractions, etc.) Could you make a committment to find 5 minutes everyday to sit in the quiet and listen for Gods voice?
